AI Regulation: AI Act and FTC
On April 21, 2021, the European Commission proposed the AI Act – a bold step to regulate artificial intelligence solutions and technologies. Now a year has passed, and the debates are still ongoing with criticisms on its inclusion and discrimination tendencies on its passing.
An overview of the act, a ban should be implemented on AI systems that:
manipulate users through obscure techniques.
exploit the fragility of vulnerable individuals leads to harmful consequences.
are used by governments for social scoring.
are used in publicly accessible platforms like remote biometric identification by law enforcement agencies.
The US also eyes to regulate AI starting with a post from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) followed by a proposed rule that “limit privacy abuses, and ensure that algorithmic decision-making does not result in unlawful discrimination.” If passed it will hopefully solve serious problems of discrimination, fraud, and related data misuse related to the use of AI.
New Regulation: Digital Services Act
Spearheading the campaign to fight against hate speech and disinformation, European Union and the European Parliament reached a political agreement for the Digital Services Act (DSA) during a recent trilogue negotiations on April 23, 2022. The landmark legislation will force big tech companies like Meta, Amazon and Google to prohibit targeted advertisements for children and report problems, and their non-compliance means large amounts of fines.
With the increasing advancements in online intermediaries and platforms, the new regulation aims to level the field for companies and avoid big companies to become rule-makers. As users globally shift to digital services, expect more laws that safeguard privacy rights and cultivate innovation.
Report: Impact of Legal Analytics
More companies are maximizing data analytics in the crucial decision making process. With emerging legal tech platforms focusing on using big data, more legal ops teams that use it will increase. A report from Lex Machina captures how current legal professionals view legal analytics. The survey highlights the challenges organizations face in their adoption and how valuable it is to them. An increase from last year, 68% of law firms now use legal analytics, which can be a sign that the fear of automation is diminishing and the legal industry is discovering the benefits of technology.
Below are some of the highlights:
98% of respondents who currently use Legal Analytics believe that Legal Analytics is valuable or somewhat valuable.
78% of the respondents who are non-users say the same.
74% of Legal Analytics users said that the key driver for the adoption is successful litigation.
63% answered that the next step would be Legal Analytics integration into organizational data.

In anticipation of law day next month, the American Bar Association will hold several events this week.
