Canada’s Federal Privacy Legislation on AI
According to Gartner by the end of 2022, the AI market will reach $62 billion. AI has integrated into our lives with the software people use daily and including governments using it in different sectors. With its involvement in policy making laws have been drafted to regulate it.
Last year, the European Commission proposed the Artificial Intelligence Act which is expected to set a benchmark for government usage and provide protection from risks or negative consequences for individuals of AI. Following the EU, Canada has introduced Bill C-27 which includes the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act, a federal regulation that will involve private sector personal information protection practices.
Below are the highlights of the proposed bill:
Part 2 of The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) will be changed to "An Act to provide for the use of electronic means to communicate or record information or transactions," or the Electronic Documents Act.
The Artificial Intelligence and Data Act will establish oversight in international and interprovincial trade and commerce in AI systems.
An administrative tribunal will be created to oversee certain decisions made by the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and make orders for contraventions of the CPPA.
If passed organizations that fail to comply will be fined up to 5% of global revenue or CA$25 million (the US $19 million), whichever is higher.
CISA Accepting Public Comments on TIC 3.0 Cloud Use Case
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has posted an advisory asking for the public’s input on the draft released by Trusted Internet Connections (TIC) program on its TIC 3.0 Cloud Use Case.
According to CISA TIC 3.0, Cloud Use Case is meant to provide security on the network and multi-boundary security should be applied in cloud environments, it also focuses on deployments for Infrastructure-as-a-Service, Platform-as-a-Service, Software-as-a-Service, and Email-as-a-Service.
Interested parties have until July 22, 2022, to review and share their thoughts on the draft.
