Definition

Every legal department deals with a variety of requests from internal clients such as contract review, legal advice, or something more complex. Legal Department Request Resolution Time (LDRRT) measures how long it takes to handle these requests. By tracking this, legal departments can assess, optimize, and report back their efficiency and responsiveness to internal clients.

The faster a legal department can resolve requests, the more agile and supportive it is in helping the business run smoothly. LDRRT is an important KPI that gives a picture of how well the legal team is keeping up with internal demand and where potential delays might be happening. But speed isn’t everything. The complexity of certain requests can add time to the process, so it’s essential to balance quick resolutions with thorough, accurate work.


Limitation

Request complexity can significantly impact LDRRT. Some requests are straightforward, while others may involve extensive research, analysis, or cross-departmental coordination, leading to longer resolution times. Without accounting for factors such as type of request, priority, and complexity, this metric may not accurately reflect the efficiency of the legal department. Segmenting the data based on those factors allows for more meaningful insights, helping identify where processes for handling complex requests can be streamlined.

To improve LDRRT, legal departments can focus on simplifying workflows, removing unnecessary steps, or implementing technology solutions to help speed up the process.
